A Real-World Detection That Proves Why Reading Behaviour Matters More Than a Final Response

In this video, you'll see operational footage of Griff, one of my specialist tobacco detection dogs, locating a highly sophisticated illegal tobacco concealment during a live enforcement search.

The search was conducted as part of a Devon Trading Standards operation, assisted by Devon and Cornwall Police, targeting the illegal tobacco trade and the sophisticated concealments often used to hide illicit products.

The first half of the video shows Griff working independently through a complex search environment, displaying clear changes of behaviour despite the source being hidden deep within an inaccessible void.

Griff's initial change of behaviour occurred in a separate room, focused on a section of wall approximately 2.5 metres away from where officers eventually uncovered a hydraulically operated concealment on the opposite side.

In the second half, I break down the search and explain why Griff showed a change of behaviour at that location, what he was telling us, and why understanding canine behaviour is often more important than waiting for a trained final response.

This is a powerful example of the difference between training scenarios and real-world operational deployments. Dogs don't always have direct access to source odour, and handlers must be able to recognise and interpret subtle behavioural changes when concealments are sophisticated and inaccessible.

The video highlights an important lesson for detection dog handlers: a trained final response is only part of the picture. True detection skill lies in understanding what your dog is communicating throughout the search.
