Tobacco detection dog Bran helped officers uncover a sophisticated hydraulic concealment containing more than £20,000 worth of illegal tobacco during a Walsall enforcement operation.

Bran Uncovers Sophisticated Tobacco Hide in Walsall

A specialist tobacco detection dog played a crucial role in the discovery of a sophisticated hidden tobacco concealment during a recent enforcement operation in Walsall.

Bran, a trained tobacco detection dog, assisted Trading Standards officers and police during coordinated inspections of retail premises suspected of selling illicit tobacco products. Bran was being handled by Stu Phillips, who has been trusted by Walsall Trading Standards for the past 13 years to help uncover illegal tobacco products and sophisticated concealments used by rogue traders.

During the operation, Bran alerted officers to the presence of tobacco concealed within a highly sophisticated hydraulic storage compartment hidden beneath commercial premises. The concealed chamber, located below floor level and hidden beneath fitted units, had been specifically designed to evade detection and conceal illegal tobacco products.

Following Bran's indication, officers carried out a detailed search and eventually gained access to the compartment, uncovering a significant quantity of illicit cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco.

In total, more than 16,000 illegal cigarettes and several kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco were seized during the operation, with the products estimated to be worth in excess of £20,000.

Additional concealments were also identified at other premises, including hidden tobacco stored within a modified refrigerator and in a concealed area behind a shop.

The discovery highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods being used by some traders to hide illegal tobacco products. Despite the complexity of the concealment, Bran's specialist training enabled officers to identify the hidden cache, while the experience of handler Stu Phillips helped support the successful outcome of the operation.

Over the last 13 years, Stu Phillips has worked closely with Walsall Trading Standards, helping officers uncover illegal tobacco from a wide range of concealments, including hidden rooms, underground storage chambers, hydraulic systems and purpose-built secret compartments designed to evade enforcement activity.

The seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal tobacco trade, protect legitimate businesses and prevent illicit tobacco products from reaching local communities.

Investigations into the seizure remain ongoing.
